Celebrating 60 Years of the Cedi: A Milestone in Ghana’s Monetary History

This year, Ghana proudly marks a significant milestone in its monetary history as the national currency, the cedi, turns sixty. The Bank of Ghana will commemorate this important occasion under the theme: “60 years of the cedi: a symbol of sovereignty, stability, and economic resilience.” Scheduled for October 28, 2025, the official launch event will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Dramani Mahama as the esteemed guest of honour.

The cedi@60 celebration will feature a prominent currency conference attended by experts from global central banks, academia, and the private sector. This gathering aims to reflect on the six decades of Ghana’s monetary journey and explore avenues for the advancement of its financial system. In addition to the conference, various flagship activities such as regional roadshows and public education campaigns on clean note handling and currency security will take place.

The Bank of Ghana has designed youth-focused competitions in art, music, and essays to deepen the appreciation of the cedi’s history and significance among the younger generation. This initiative is expected to engage the public and revitalize confidence in the cedi as an essential pillar of Ghana’s economic identity. By celebrating this monumental occasion, the Bank aims to foster a strong collective effort to protect the integrity of the cedi for future generations.
