Former Super Eagles Striker Michael Eneramo Dies After Collapsing During Match

Former Nigerian international Michael Eneramo has tragically passed away after collapsing during a friendly football match in Kaduna.

The 40-year-old striker is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest just minutes into the second half of the game on Friday. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community.

Eneramo earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles and built a solid club career across North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. He featured in leagues in Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, gaining recognition for his physical presence, relentless work rate, and eye for goal.

He is best remembered for his successful spell with Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where fans affectionately nicknamed him “The Tank” due to his powerful style of play and consistent performances.

One of Eneramo’s most memorable contributions came during Nigeria’s qualification campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His crucial goal in a 2–2 draw against Tunisia played a significant role in helping the team secure a place at the tournament.

Despite his impact, he was not included in the final squad for the competition in South Africa.

The Nigeria Football Federation described his passing as devastating, with tributes pouring in from across the football fraternity.

Eneramo had previously turned down an opportunity to represent Tunisia at international level, choosing instead to remain loyal to Nigeria.

His death adds to a list of African footballers who have tragically died after collapsing on the pitch. Notable cases include Marc-Vivien Foé, Cheick Tioté, and Raphael Dwamena.

Medical experts have previously warned of increased risks of cardiac-related incidents among athletes, prompting calls for stricter health screenings. Former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has been among those advocating mandatory medical checks for players.
