Incumbent President Ouattara declared winner of Ivory Coast election

In a significant political development, Alassane Ouattara, the 83-year-old president of Ivory Coast, has secured his fourth term in office. This announcement comes on the heels of an election characterized by controversy, as two of Ouattara’s primary rivals were barred from running.

According to provisional results released by the electoral commission, Ouattara achieved a remarkable 89.8% of the vote. His closest competitor, businessman Jeal-Louis Billon, garnered only 3.09% of the votes, a clear indication of the political landscape following the exclusion of high-profile candidates.

The electoral environment was notably affected by the calls for a boycott from former president Laurent Gbagbo and ex-Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam. After being barred from the race, they urged their supporters to abstain from participating in the elections. This led to a voter turnout of only 50.1%, a figure that highlights the impact of political rivalry on public engagement and the electoral process in the nation.

The landslide victory of Ouattara underscores the complexities of Ivory Coast’s political landscape. While his administration celebrates this significant electoral win, the underlying issues and tensions within the country serve as a reminder of the challenges that still lie ahead for governance and national unity.
