Education Minister’s Stance on Long Hair in Senior High Schools

Education Minister’s Stance on Long Hair in Senior High Schools

The debate on grooming rules in Ghana’s senior high schools (SHSs) has garnered significant attention, especially regarding students’ hair. Recently, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu reiterated a firm stance against long hair in schools. He emphasized that SHSs serve as institutions for discipline and not as platforms for fashion or beauty pageants. This discussion revived amidst public outcry sparked by a viral video showing a first-year student having her long hair cut as part of admission requirements.

During a recent speech at the 75th anniversary of Mawuli Senior High School, Minister Iddrisu firmly stated, “We will not tolerate it today or tomorrow. The school environment is not a place for beauty contests.” His remarks were directed at ensuring that schools remain focused on discipline and character building, essential components for the proper development of students. He argued that allowing exceptions could lead to further compromises in other areas, such as footwear and attire.

Iddrisu assured that headmasters and the Ghana Education Service (GES) are empowered to enforce these grooming policies firmly. The director-general of GES, who supported the minister’s position, emphasized the importance of maintaining uniformity and discipline. These principles, they argue, are vital in shaping generations of successful leaders. The conversation surrounding grooming rules continues, echoing past controversies, such as the 2021 incident at Achimota School concerning students with dreadlocks, which raised questions around cultural expression and human rights.
