Crackdown on Illegal Mining: Over 1,500 Arrests in 2025

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has reported alarming figures related to illegal mining activities across Ghana. As of October 2025, more than 1,500 individuals, including 60 foreign nationals, have been arrested in various operations aimed at eradicating this illicit activity. The Director of Communications at the ministry, Ama Mawusi Mawunyefia, made these revelations during a recent appearance on GTV’s Current Agenda show.

The national anti-illegal mining taskforce (NAIMOS) has actively conducted raids throughout the year, focusing on areas known for illegal mining, such as forest reserves and water bodies. Mawunyefia emphasized that these operations are not only frequent but also strategic, citing that more than 60 Chinese nationals were apprehended in connection with illegal mining operations across the country.

In an effort to protect the environment, the taskforce has seized numerous pieces of machinery used in these illegal activities, including excavators and water pumps. While some environmentally harmful equipment is destroyed, others are repurposed for agricultural use. The government aims to not only combat illegal mining but also foster transparency by providing weekly updates on arrests and environmental recovery efforts, demonstrating a commitment to restoring degraded lands and protecting resources.

With ongoing prosecutions, the ministry is determined to make illegal mining unattractive while encouraging responsible practices. The overarching goal is to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
