Wydad AC Crush Asante Kotoko 5 – 1 to Advance in CAF Confederation Cup

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko SC suffered a heavy 5–1 defeat at the hands of Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup playoff, played at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca on Friday, October 24, 2025.

The result saw Wydad progress comfortably to the group stage, sealing a 6–1 aggregate victory over the Porcupine Warriors, who had earlier lost the first leg 1–0 in Kumasi.

From the blast of the whistle, the Moroccan side dominated possession and dictated the pace of the game. Their sharp attack tore through Kotoko’s defense repeatedly, finding the back of the net five times in a ruthless display of continental football experience.

Kotoko’s only consolation came in the second half through a well-taken goal that briefly lifted their spirits, but Wydad’s relentless pressure quickly silenced any hopes of a comeback.

The defeat marks a painful end to Kotoko’s CAF campaign, which had started with optimism but ultimately fell short against one of North Africa’s most formidable sides.

Analysts say Kotoko’s downfall stemmed from defensive lapses, poor coordination in midfield, and an inability to contain Wydad’s wide play. The Moroccan champions exploited every gap, converting nearly all their clear chances.

This loss has reignited conversations among fans and pundits about Kotoko’s continental preparedness. Many have called for strategic restructuring and better investment in player quality if the club hopes to compete effectively at the top level in African football.

Despite the setback, Kotoko’s management and supporters remain hopeful that the experience will strengthen the team ahead of upcoming domestic and continental challenges.

Wydad AC, meanwhile, celebrated in front of their home crowd, securing yet another ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage and reaffirming their status as one of the continent’s elite clubs.
