Tragic Incident at Odwira Festival in Ahwerease: One Dead, Four Injured

The Odwira Festival is a significant cultural celebration in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region. It marks a time for community gathering and traditional rites. Unfortunately, this year’s festivities took a tragic turn when gunfire erupted, leading to a devastating outcome.

On Wednesday, October 22, a violent clash broke out resulting in the death of one person and leaving four others injured due to gunshot wounds. The incident is reported to have occurred during the ceremonial lifting of the ban on drumming and noise-making by the Abokomahene of the Asona family. A dispute erupted with the Abimuhene of Ahwerease, which escalated quickly into violence.

Following the chaos, 34 suspects have been arrested, and a pump-action gun along with a pistol were recovered from the scene. Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the ongoing investigations. He assured the public of the police’s dedication to maintaining peace during this year’s Odwira Festival and beyond, affirming that anyone involved in the violence would face the consequences of the law.
