A catastrophic train crash occurred on Monday night in the town of Shinile, eastern Ethiopia, resulting in the tragic deaths of 15 individuals. Local authorities reported that the train derailed before colliding with a stationary train, leading to a devastating scene with multiple carriages overturned and crushed. Eyewitness accounts indicate that numerous passengers were forced to jump from the train in a desperate bid to escape the chaos.
The exact number of passengers injured remains uncertain, with estimates ranging between 27 and 29. Mohammed Adem, a representative of the Somali regional government, confirmed that all deceased and injured passengers were promptly recovered from the crash site. It is heartbreaking to note that many of those traveling on the train were young individuals, some of whom survived due to their quick reflexes in jumping from the carriages.
The district commissioner, Jibril Omar, attributed the cause of the accident to the poor condition of the train, which had aged significantly and was incapable of bearing heavy loads. Reports suggest that the train was burdened with both passengers and freight, including essential commodities like rice, pasta, and cooking oil. The issue of overloading is believed to have played a vital role in the tragedy, as trains usually cannot safely accommodate such excessive amounts of cargo.
In light of this incident, the Somali regional authorities have initiated an investigation to uncover the precise circumstances surrounding this heart-wrenching train collision. Although train accidents are relatively uncommon in Ethiopia, this recent disaster serves as a grim reminder of the challenges faced within the country’s aging transport infrastructure.
