Russian General Killed in Car Bomb Attack in Moscow

A senior Russian military figure has been killed in a suspected car bombing in Moscow, authorities have confirmed. The incident marks one of the most high-profile assassination attempts inside Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.

According to officials, the blast occurred on Monday when a vehicle belonging to the general exploded near his residence in the capital. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Several others were reportedly injured.

Preliminary information suggests the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device placed inside or beneath the car. Local media reports say investigators are exploring the possibility that the attack was politically motivated, though they have not ruled out other motives.

The identity of the general has not yet been released pending notification of family members, but sources say he had been serving in a strategic command role within Russia’s military structure.

Security agencies have cordoned off the surrounding area and launched a large-scale investigation. Video footage circulating on social media reportedly shows flames engulfing the vehicle moments after the explosion, but authorities have urged the public not to share unverified material.

This latest attack comes at a sensitive moment for Russia amid the ongoing war with Ukraine and rising tensions inside the country. In recent years, a number of high-ranking military, political, and intelligence figures have been targeted in car bombings and other attacks, several of which Moscow has blamed on foreign intelligence services.

Officials have not announced suspects but say they are pursuing “multiple leads.”

The Kremlin has condemned the killing as a terrorist act aimed at destabilising Russia. In a statement, government representatives vowed that the perpetrators would be tracked down and punished.
