Ghana has strongly criticized the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the action as an unlawful seizure of power and a serious threat to democratic governance in the region.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 26, 2025, Ghana said the coup had interrupted the democratic process that followed the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23. The military’s intervention, the statement noted, halted the release of election results that were expected on November 27, effectively derailing the nation’s progress toward democratic consolidation.
The government said it was deeply troubled by what it termed a “blatant attempt” to overturn the mandate of the people of Guinea-Bissau. It urged the immediate reinstatement of constitutional order and called on all parties in the country to respect democratic norms and address any electoral disputes through lawful, transparent, and peaceful means.
Ghana also stressed the importance of protecting civilians, foreign nationals, and in particular members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission stationed in Guinea-Bissau. It insisted that the safety and unhindered movement of ECOWAS officials must be guaranteed.
The government appealed to the citizens of Guinea-Bissau to stay calm and refrain from actions that could intensify instability. Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ECOWAS and the African Union as they work together to resolve the crisis under established regional and continental frameworks promoting democracy and constitutional governance.
