Ghana’s Speaker Bagbin: A Key Voice in Global Debt Reform Ahead of the 2025 GDI Conference

Ghana is positioning itself as a leading voice in global debt reform ahead of the 2025 Global Debt Initiative (GDI) Conference, with Speaker of Parliament Alban S.K. Bagbin reaffirming the country’s commitment to championing fair financial practices for developing nations.

The Speaker’s engagement with the Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFC), led by Acting CEO Selassie Kofi Ackom, highlights Ghana’s proactive role in shaping the agenda for the 9th Annual GDI Conference, scheduled for 27th–28th November 2025 at Palms By Eagles, Airport City.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized that African countries are increasingly constrained by unsustainable debt and shrinking fiscal space. He stressed that coordinated international efforts are essential to alleviate harsh repayment burdens and enable economic growth. “Trade and finance remain Africa’s biggest structural challenges,” he noted, calling for urgent global reforms in debt architecture, sovereign lending terms, and credit rating systems.

Ackom lauded the Speaker’s insights, describing him as a “thought leader” whose perspectives will significantly enrich the conference discussions. With Ghana actively navigating its own debt restructuring, Bagbin’s leadership signals the country’s ambition to move from being a passive case study to a strategic influencer in global financial reforms.

The 2025 GDI Conference is expected to bring together international lenders, policymakers, economists, and private-sector stakeholders to explore solutions for debt relief, economic justice, and sustainable development. Bagbin’s participation reinforces Ghana’s growing influence in advocating for a fairer, more equitable global financial system.
