Two Robbery Suspects Convicted and Sentenced to Prison After Robbery Incident in Obuasi

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has successfully secured convictions for two robbery suspects following a trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court. The convicts, identified as Francis Oppong (Kwame Abuu) and Francis Nyamekye (Amearo), were found guilty of conspiracy, aiding and abetting robbery, and robbery after a full trial.

The two men were arrested after a robbery incident in Kyekyewere near Obuasi on December 16, 2023, where they and their accomplices assaulted a small-scale miner and stole valuable items. The police investigation revealed that Oppong, who lived near the victim, had been surveilling the victim’s movements and provided crucial information to the robbery gang.

During the attack, the robbers stole a pump-action gun, a Huawei phone valued at GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold worth GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash. The victim was also assaulted and suffered injuries in the incident.

The court, presided over by His Honour Mr. Isaac Appeatu, convicted Oppong to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour, while Nyamekye received a 25-year sentence. Both convicts were transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to begin their sentences.

Further investigations led to Nyamekye’s arrest at a private hospital in Obuasi, where he was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds from a previous failed robbery attempt. The police continue to track down the remaining accomplices, who are still on the run, and are determined to bring them to justice.
