Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash Claims Over 40 Lives on Kampala-Gulu Highway

A catastrophic multi-vehicle crash has taken place on Uganda’s Kampala-Gulu highway, claiming the lives of 46 individuals. Initially, the police reported a higher death toll of 63; however, this figure has since been revised as some victims were not killed but were unconscious and are now receiving medical care.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight, when two buses travelling in opposite directions collided while trying to overtake a lorry and a car. According to police reports, one bus swerved in a bid to avoid the accident and inadvertently initiated a chain reaction, resulting in head-on and side collisions involving multiple vehicles. The investigation into this tragic incident is currently ongoing.

The injured passengers were transported to various hospitals in the western town of Kiryandongo for treatment. With fatalities confirmed, police have stressed the importance of careful driving, especially during overtaking maneuvers, which remain a leading cause of accidents on Ugandan roads. President Yoweri Museveni expressed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and outlined plans for compensation for the bereaved and injured. He has urged drivers to exercise caution to prevent future tragedies like this one.
