Tragedy in South Kordofan: Devastating Drone Strike Hits Kindergarten

A devastating drone strike has reportedly hit a kindergarten in Kalogi, a town in Sudan’s South Kordofan region, killing at least 50 people — including 33 children — in one of the deadliest single incidents since the country’s civil war erupted.

The Sudan Doctors’ Network and the national army accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out Thursday’s attack. The RSF has not publicly responded to the allegation.

According to the army-aligned foreign ministry, the kindergarten was struck twice by drone-fired missiles. Civilians and medical workers who rushed to save the injured were also targeted, deepening the tragedy.

UNICEF condemned the attack, calling it a “horrific violation of children’s rights.” UNICEF spokesperson Sheldon Yett stressed that children “should never pay the price of conflict,” urging all factions to halt the violence and allow unimpeded humanitarian access.

The RSF, meanwhile, accused the army of launching its own drone operation on Friday, striking a fuel depot and market at the Adre border crossing with Chad in the Darfur region. According to the Sudan War Monitor, the attack caused civilian casualties and heavy damage, though the military has not commented on the claim.

Sudan has been engulfed in war since April 2023, when a power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces — once partners — escalated into a nationwide conflict. With no independent verification of the latest reports, the information emerging from the frontlines remains heavily contested.

South Kordofan, along with North and West Kordofan, has become a critical battleground as fighting intensifies between Khartoum and Darfur. The combined region, home to nearly eight million people, is now enduring some of the conflict’s fiercest clashes.
