President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, following a recommendation from the Police Council. The extension, effective from 28th December 2025, allows the IGP to continue serving beyond the statutory retirement age.
The Police Council expressed confidence in IGP Yohunu’s leadership, highlighting his critical role in consolidating ongoing reforms within the Ghana Police Service. In an official letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the President emphasized that the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the IGP’s contribution to operational effectiveness and national stability.
During the re-engagement period, the IGP will maintain his current responsibilities and continue implementing key transformation initiatives he has championed in recent years. The letter requests that IGP Yohunu formally indicate his acceptance within three days of receipt.
The extension has attracted attention across security and governance sectors, seen as a strategic move to ensure continuity in Ghana’s internal security architecture during a period of pivotal national developments.
