On Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, officiated the swearing-in of the newly elected members of parliament for Akwatia and Tamale Central. These appointments bring fresh perspectives and representation to the legislature, now consisting of 276 active members.
During the brief but significant ceremony, Bernard Bediako Baidoo and Professor Alidu Seidu, both from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), took their oaths of allegiance and the oath of a member of parliament. Professor Seidu chose to affirm his commitment on the Quran, while Mr. Baidoo opted for the Bible. Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of integrity and diligence in their new roles, stating, “I will hold you to the two oaths you have sworn.”
In a light-hearted moment, Bagbin humorously referred to the tools needed for effective governance, suggesting he would provide them with a hoe and a cutlass, representing the constitution and standing orders. He advised, “if you want to discharge your duties well, you must sleep with them,” drawing laughter from colleagues. His remarks underscored the significance of their responsibilities, especially following the recent by-elections due to the unfortunate passing of former MPs.
Mr. Bediako Baidoo triumphed in the Akwatia by-election with 18,199 votes, filling the vacancy left by the late Ernest Yaw Kumi. Similarly, Professor Alidu Seidu’s election was necessary following the untimely death of Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. As these new legislators embark on their journey, the expectations are high for their commitment to serve the constituents and the nation.
