Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that the new Aflao Market — a flagship project under President John Dramani Mahama — will feature a wide range of modern facilities designed to transform the area into a major commercial and social hub.

The project, funded through a US$30 million grant from China, will include schools, administrative offices, fire stations, clinics, warehouses, transport terminals, pharmacies, abattoirs, and recreation centres, among other key amenities.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, November 8, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that he recently held a meeting with all project partners to review designs, assess the feasibility report, and finalize stakeholder responsibilities ahead of the sod-cutting ceremony.

He expressed appreciation to major stakeholders for their collaboration, including Togbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area; Dzifa Gomashie, MP for Ketu South and Minister for Tourism; James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister; Chinese Ambassador H.E. Tong Defa; Ketu South MCE Nicholas Kwabla Worlachie, and other technical partners.

The Foreign Minister noted that construction is expected to commence soon after President Mahama officially launches the project, adding that the new Aflao Market will not only enhance trade but also improve social infrastructure and economic activity in the Volta Region.
