The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has pledged government support for investors and business owners affected by the China City Mall fire at Santasi, which destroyed millions of dollars’ worth of goods and property.
The fire, which started at the rear section of the building on Thursday, October 30, 2025, spread quickly through the mall, consuming several shops dealing in electronics, groceries, and household products. Witnesses say the blaze moved so fast that most traders could not salvage their goods.
Mayor Agyemang, who visited the site, expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and acknowledged the severe financial losses caused by the inferno.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost millions of dollars through this fire. The owners, I am told, are out of the country, but their workers and representatives are here. We will reach out to the investors as soon as possible, reassure them, and offer the needed national support,” he said.
He commended the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and volunteers for their swift intervention, noting that no casualties were recorded. “The fire department, together with bystanders, managed to evacuate all the staff safely. What we have lost are goods and property,” the mayor added.
Mr. Agyemang emphasised the importance of supporting the investors, who he said have contributed significantly to local employment and Kumasi’s business growth.
“These are foreign nationals who chose to invest in Ghana and employ hundreds of our youth. We will do whatever we can to help them recover and possibly rebuild,” he assured.
The China City Mall, which opened earlier in 2025, had quickly become one of Kumasi’s busiest shopping destinations. The GNFS has begun investigations into the cause of the blaze and is assessing the full extent of the damage.
