The Ghana Police Service has launched an extensive investigation into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a junior footballer at Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by his coach before his death.
According to police reports, Ransford’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, informed the Amasaman Police in February 2025 that her son had fallen ill and later passed away on February 28, 2025. She claimed her son had confided in her that his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually abused him.
The case has since been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the CID Headquarters, where suspect Anyass Ibrahim was arrested and interrogated. Police say he was granted bail but is required to report regularly to CID officers as investigations continue.
Preliminary medical reports submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Kumasi) indicate that Ransford had been treated for liver and kidney complications before his death. The Police are, however, seeking official confirmation from both hospitals, as earlier requests for detailed records had been declined.
Authorities have obtained a court order compelling both hospitals to release the full medical documents to assist the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, the Police have extended their investigations after a viral video surfaced, allegedly showing suspect Ibrahim in a compromising act with a minor.
The Police Service has appealed to the public to assist with credible information that can help the investigation by contacting the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or the nearest police station.
