Ghana’s New Minimum Wage: A 9% Increase Effective January 2026

The Government of Ghana has announced a 9% increase in the National Daily Minimum Wage (NDMW) and public sector base pay, effective January 1, 2026, following successful negotiations with Organized Labour and employers.

The new minimum wage will rise from GH₵19.97 to GH₵21.77 per day, as agreed by the National Tripartite Committee (NTC) during its meeting in Accra on November 9, 2025. The adjustment, which takes into account the rising cost of living and economic recovery efforts, will remain in force until December 31, 2026.

The NTC communiqué, signed by representatives of government, employers, and organized labour, emphasized that any institution paying below the new rate will face sanctions under Ghana’s Labour Act.

Minister for Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson lauded the cooperation of Organized Labour, describing the increase as a balanced move that supports workers while maintaining economic stability. He reaffirmed the government’s goal to reduce inflation further and improve living standards.

“We have weathered tough times, but the economy is gradually stabilizing. Inflation has dropped, and our focus is to sustain this progress to ease the cost of living for Ghanaians,” Dr. Forson said.

Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, praised both government and labour negotiators for their constructive dialogue, noting that the agreement reflects the government’s dedication to fair compensation and industrial harmony.

Trades Union Congress (TUC) Secretary-General Joshua Ansah acknowledged the efforts of Organized Labour in reaching the deal but urged the government to avoid introducing new taxes or tariffs that could reduce the real value of the increase.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ministry of Finance will oversee the full implementation of the new wage and salary adjustments from January 2026.
