The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, in partnership with Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd and KGL Group, has officially launched the 2026 Independence Day Walk/Run, slated for March 7, 2026. The event is designed not only to commemorate Ghana’s independence but also to champion nationwide health and strengthen national unity.
Speaking at the launch, Wilhemina Asamoah, Chief Director at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, said the Walk/Run represents more than a fitness activity. “This event is more than just a race. It is a movement to drive community engagement, encourage healthy lifestyles and reinforce our shared unity,” she said.
Catherine Morton, Race Director for Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd, echoed this message, noting that the event symbolises Ghana’s renewed commitment to well-being. “On March 7, Ghana will take a major step — not only in honour of our independence, but in affirmation of our collective health, vitality and future,” she stated.
Morton described the Walk/Run as a new national tradition that will redefine how Ghanaians celebrate independence. “This marks the beginning of a fresh way of celebrating — not only with parades and speeches, but through energy, movement and collective participation,” she said. She added that the vision behind the event aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s goal of building a healthier, more united nation.
Vice President of Ghana Athletics, Andrew Agbo Kitcher, highlighted the deep connection between athletics and Ghana’s national identity. “Athletics has always been central to the story of Ghana. Running is a symbol of our resilience, determination and collective pride,” he said. He also commended organisations promoting mass sports participation and community fitness.
The collaboration between the Ministry, Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd and KGL Group reflects a shared commitment to improving public health through sports while promoting national cohesion. The March 7 event is expected to rally Ghanaians across the country in a celebration that blends fitness with patriotism.
Organisers say the Walk/Run will become a long-term tradition, encouraging future generations to celebrate independence through health, unity and active participation. Ghanaians are encouraged to take part in what is expected to be a vibrant, nationwide celebration of movement, pride and well-being.
