The nation of Ghana is in mourning following the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings at the age of 76. Sources close to the family report that she passed away in the early hours of Thursday, 23 October, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. Known for her monumental role in Ghana’s political landscape, her legacy will endure in the hearts of many.
Nana Konadu was born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Central Region. She made headlines as the wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings, but her work extended far beyond her marriage. As the founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP), she left her mark by advocating for women’s empowerment and social development. Her passion influenced a generation and helped shape the political discourse surrounding women’s rights in Ghana.
Just prior to her passing, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings participated in several significant public events, including laying wreaths at the Jubilee House to honour eight public servants who lost their lives in a tragic helicopter accident. Additionally, she attended the funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, where she was seen comforting traditional leaders. Her final years were filled with engagements that highlighted her commitment to her community.
As Ghana reflects on her life, the impact she made will not be forgotten. Her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, also left a significant legacy upon his passing in November 2020, and now together, they will be remembered as influential figures in Ghana’s history.
