First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama on Thursday led a major community health screening exercise in Sunyani, held in partnership with the Ghana AIDS Commission. The initiative marks the second in a series of regional outreach programmes, following the first event in Accra.

Before the screening began, the First Lady called on traditional and religious leaders to use their influence to promote healthier lifestyles and responsible behaviour within their communities. She emphasised that Ghana remains firmly committed to eliminating AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 — a goal she believes is within reach if everyone contributes.

Mrs. Mahama encouraged parents to have open, honest conversations with their children about health and sexuality, noting that such guidance is essential in reducing stigma around HIV. She further urged teachers to support students with accurate information and compassion.

Ghana currently has more than 334,000 people living with HIV, with the Bono Region among the most affected. Describing the situation as deeply worrying, the First Lady stressed the need for intensified education, prevention campaigns, and early testing to reduce new infections.

As President of the Lordina Foundation, she underscored that good health remains the cornerstone of national development. Without strong, healthy populations, she said, productivity declines and communities struggle to thrive.

Mrs. Mahama also highlighted the importance of regular health screening programmes, noting that they help individuals identify health challenges early and seek timely care.
