The Ghanaian education system is undergoing significant transformation as the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a pivotal directive that mandates the use of mother tongue instruction in all schools. This initiative is aimed at enhancing educational outcomes and ensuring that students grasp concepts effectively from their early years.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, this directive aligns with efforts to reform the education sector and reinforce the importance of local languages. By making the use of mother tongue instruction compulsory, the Ministry seeks to improve comprehension and learning among students at the basic education level. The minister emphasized that implementing this initiative can lead to better engagement and academic success.
To ensure the successful roll-out of this initiative, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been instructed to strictly enforce this new policy. The Minister’s announcement came during the launch of a free tertiary education program specifically designed for persons living with disabilities. He reiterated that this move is part of President Mahama’s broader educational reset agenda, which seeks to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment throughout the country.
