Court rescinds bench warrant after Wontumi shows up

Today, a bench warrant was issued for the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party. The warrant was issued by the high court’s criminal division following Wontumi’s failure to appear for his scheduled hearing.

However, shortly after the warrant was issued at approximately 9:40 a.m., Wontumi arrived at the court with his legal team. Their appearance took place past 10:00 a.m., after which they petitioned the court for the rescission of the bench warrant. Judge Audrey Kocuvi-Tay granted the petition by 11:39 a.m. during the proceedings.

Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, explained to the court that they believed the case was adjusted to a 10:00 a.m. scheduled time for a case management conference. While the judge acknowledged their explanation, she emphasized the importance of punctuality, advising Wontumi to arrive well in advance for future cases. The trial involves serious charges against Wontumi and Akonta Mining Limited for allegedly unauthorized mining operations and the improper assignment of mineral rights at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The court has adjourned the case, setting the next hearing for November 4, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. It is notable that Wontumi has been granted bail set at GH¢15,000,000 under strict conditions, including surrendering his passport.
