A routine train journey from Doncaster to London turned into a nightmare on Saturday evening when a man went on a stabbing spree onboard, leaving several passengers fighting for their lives.
The shocking incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on the 18:25 London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service. Witnesses say the attacker suddenly pulled out a large knife and began assaulting fellow passengers, sending others scrambling for safety.
The train made an emergency stop at Huntingdon Station in Cambridgeshire, where armed police stormed the carriages and arrested two men. British Transport Police later confirmed that a 32-year-old man had been detained on suspicion of attempted murder. The second man was questioned and released.
At least ten people were injured, with nine reported to be in critical condition. Victims were treated by paramedics and air ambulance teams before being rushed to nearby hospitals.
Police say the motive for the attack is still unknown but have ruled out terrorism. The national security protocol known as “Plato,” which signals a possible terror threat, was briefly activated before being stood down once officers confirmed it was an isolated incident.
Eyewitnesses described the terrifying moments inside the train. Some passengers hid in toilets or under seats, while others tried to help the wounded using makeshift bandages. One train crew member has been praised for their bravery in helping passengers and alerting authorities during the chaos.
Chief Superintendent Lisa Garrett of the British Transport Police said in a statement:
“This was a shocking and fast-moving situation. Officers responded within minutes, and the suspect was detained safely. Our investigation is ongoing as we review CCTV footage and interview witnesses.”
The attack caused major disruption on the East Coast Main Line, forcing LNER to suspend services between Peterborough and London King’s Cross for several hours. Operations resumed later in the evening after police secured the scene.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “heartbreaking” and praised the swift actions of emergency responders. “My thoughts are with everyone affected by this horrific event,” he said.
British Transport Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or recorded video footage to come forward as investigations continue.
