Assemblies of God Urges Caution: Beware of Unaccredited Institutions

Importance of Accreditation

The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has raised a significant alert concerning the issue of unaccredited tertiary institutions. Following a recent notice from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which identified 50 institutions lacking proper accreditation, the church has directed its leaders and members to exercise caution.

Guidelines for Pastors

In a statement issued on October 21, 2025, the general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Rev. Stephen Y. Wengam, emphasized the need for pastors to confirm the accreditation status of any educational institution they consider. This step is crucial to prevent enrollment in unrecognized institutions and to protect the integrity of qualifications pursued by church leaders.

Consequences of Unaccredited Degrees

The Assemblies of God made it clear that any qualifications obtained from these unaccredited institutions—including professional certificates and advanced degrees—would not be acknowledged within the church. This warning extends to all members, urging due diligence in the pursuit of higher education while promoting a culture of integrity.

Moreover, GTEC’s announcement highlighted the failure of these institutions to meet the required accreditation and quality assurance standards. As a preventive measure, the church leadership strongly advises all pastors to remain vigilant and ensure they are obtaining their degrees from accredited sources to avoid future issues.
