The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has mounted a decisive operation in Obuasi, disrupting illegal mining activities and reclaiming a concession belonging to Asanti Gold Corporation.
Acting on reliable intelligence, the NAIMOS Taskforce moved into the Anyankyireml area, where organized galamsey groups from parts of Amansie had reportedly taken control and blocked the rightful concession owners from accessing their site. The operation successfully cleared the area and restored full authority to the legal operators.
The swoop extended to the Obuasi Airport enclave—an area flagged for a surge in illegal mining. Taskforce personnel seized several items, including motorbikes, vehicles, water pumps, and other equipment. Makeshift shelters and mining installations were destroyed to prevent any resurgence of the illicit operations.
Although many of the miners escaped upon detecting the Taskforce, one suspected ringleader believed to be coordinating galamsey activities in Obuasi was arrested. He is currently assisting law enforcement with investigations and is expected to face prosecution.
NAIMOS says these coordinated, intelligence-driven actions will continue across the region with the aim of reclaiming vital lands, safeguarding the environment, and dismantling illegal mining networks.
